Cisco the worst pre-sale “support” I’ve ever had

We needed to replace our aging small business router.

kr12120-600x400

I called pre-sales support to get information on a router we wanted. I told them I had a pre-sales technical question. I wanted to know if the new router had this functionality the old one had. They said I could be connected to someone, but they needed information first. Name,  business name and email. They also wanted to know, when I would be making this purchase, how much I would be purchasing and what my future purchases were going to be. I provided this information and I was told it would be between 3-5 days to get a call back from someone that could help.

For reference, four years earlier when I originally bought the equipment I was able to speak to someone that had a technical background right away and it was very helpful and reassuring.

Three days pass and I get a call from Cisco, I’m excited, because we need to make this purchase. It’s the same woman, she wants my business address. I was hesitant to provide this because I have a home office, but I provided it. I confirmed that my information would not be given or sold to a 3rd party.

Four days pass, I realize that I don’t have a reference number, so if I have to call back I couldn’t reference my earlier call. I decide to call on the fourth day to see if I’m still in the waiting queue to get a call back. I bounced around in the phone system and finally got someone. I gave them my information, but they had a hard time finding my records. Finally they found it and said i was still in the queue for a call and that he wanted to help me.calvin-reading-writing-confused

I asked about protocols and features of a couple different routers. Not being technical he looked at the same spec pages and read me the same information I had access to. We settled on one that seemed to have everything I needed. He also said that we should still confirm this with someone technical and they he would expedite my call to next day.

I waited a day and finally without getting a call back and not wanting to call Cisco for a third time made the purchase. Very shortly after receiving the router I realized it wasn’t going to suit our needs. I had been given bad information. In frustration I started the search again. This time I decided to try Cisco’s chat support.

I was connected almost immediately. They seemed pleasant and asked how they could help. I distilled my question down to two short sentences. They said that they could get me an answer. I was thrilled. However, first I had to give them some information. Company name, and email. I provided this and they made it seem like I was finally going to get an answer. They came back to the chat after a short period and told me first they had to get more information before we could proceed. When I was I going to make this purchase. How many units I needed. What equipment in the future will I need to be purchasing. I’m fuming mad at this point. I told them I only need one router to replace our existing one. I explained that I had gone through this before, gave all my information answered all their questions and never got a call back or any answers after going through this exact process. That’s when I was disconnected from chat.

Even writing this now I’m still pissed about this. I still have to send back this unit and will incur shipping costs. I’ll never, ever attempt to buy anything from Cisco again after this experience. I will not recommend it and I will make every attempt to purchase equipment from any other company other then Cisco.

Thinket review and modification to make it silent

I’ve been very intrigued by the recent tidal wave of fidget devices. Back in 2013 I came across something called the Thinket when it was just a Kickstarter project.

thepredeepthinket

Note: The above is the what the Thinket looks like. I’ve altered my Thinket, the remaining images show an altered version the handle and slider.

This is about the Thinket, but let me tell you about the spinners for a moment. I wanted to try a spinner. I found one at a local shop and pulled the trigger. It’s fun. The sensation of it spinning in my hand feels good. My spinner has cheap bearings so it vibrates as it spins. I like the vibration, but it doesn’t spin for long and you have to start it up again. Once it’s spinning, the hand that holds the spinner remains relatively static. I don’t like this fundamental aspect of how spinners work. There is also a level of violence as you are whipping this thing to try to get a strong spin for maximum sensation. They can be spun with one hand, but you can’t generate much horsepower this way. It’s was a glow in the dark spinner by the way, but on to the Thinket.

Why I like the Thinket design

It can be manipulated with one hand
It engages the entire hand
It has super strong magnets (I love magnets, just ask my wife)
The shape fits naturally in the hand
It’s discreet and quiet (after my modification, I’ll explain later)

Anatomy

There are several models, this is what mine looks like. The center rod is called the slider-tube. The ends of the slider tube are called the heads. The body the tube slides through is called the handle. My handle is plastic with a brass tube that lines the inside. The slider-tube is made from stainless steel and the heads are solid brass, coated with a polished rhodium coating.

Size and weight

Here is a couple photos so you can get a sense of the size.

Handle design

There are several to choose from. I chose the plastic predeep handle design for a couple reasons. One, I wanted the newest shape because I believed it would be the easiest to manipulate. Two, I didn’t want metal because it would hit my wedding ring. I don’t think it would damage the Thinket or my ring, I just didn’t want my ring tapping the metal. For me the handle (the black part) was a bit small in diameter. I’m not convinced the depth of the scalloped ridges along the body add to the ease of manipulation. I made a modification to the body that increases the diameter, and reduces the ridges at the same time. The result is very pleasant, it still has ridges, but they are more subtle now.

Below is a photo of the change I made

thinket-handle-mod

In the above photo, I used heat shrink tubing the I purchased from Harbor Freight. I cut the length to reach the ridge just before the edge. This way the tubing once shrunk, blends seamlessly into the handle.

How it works

The slider tube has a strong magnet in the center. The handle contains two metal collars at either end. Pressing the slider overcomes the force of the magnets attraction to one steel collar and it stops at the other steel collar. The slider-tube actually bounces a bit as the magnet comes to equilibrium. This motion causes a “bounce”. In short, it’s a button you press.

Here’s a video that shows some of the ways I like to use it and I illustrate that “bounce”.

What the Thinket does for me

I’ve heard it said, it’s an anxious world. I use my Thinket to help me concentrate. I find it useful when reading for pleasure and even more when reading technical documentation and working on problem solving. It creates focus by burning my additional energy that occurs during concentration or frustration. Some people will bounce their leg, some will click a pen. I’ll Thinket if you don’t mind.

What it sounds like before I made it silent

One thing I didn’t like was the noise it makes. It’s not incredibly loud, but It is metal on metal. The idea came to me after a few days. I wrapped a piece of blue painters tape around the slider-tube. I overlapped the heads just slightly. If you don’t do this it’s quiet but the bottom part of the head still pings against the brass in the handle. 2″ painters tape works perfectly. Now it’s very quiet.

Here is a video demonstration of what it sounds like with the blue painters tape.

I enjoy it much more with the tape, and because it’s quiet I can focus more on the feel. I tried other tapes as well. You can use a clear tape and you won’t loose that fancy shiny look. I used heavy duty packing tape. I think the painters tape works best because it has a waxy surface and this makes it slide through the handle smoothly. Overall I think it has a much improved feel with tape around the slider-tube.

Occasionally the device will grab your skin. The shape of the head combined with the flair of the brass in the handle creates a space that can grab your skin. I would not say this is painful, and the first time it happened I enjoyed the sensation. However it can become a bit annoying. Hand positioning can be adjusted so this does not happen.

Does it table spin?

It depends on who you ask, but it can table spin according to the inventor. The unit as a whole can spin, or you can spin the slider tube. It even spins quite well according to David the inventor who says he likes “shiny things”. Different shapes spin in different ways and some better then others. There are videos online where you can watch him demonstrate this. The Thinket is a hand crafted quality item. I don’t like the idea of spinning it because it could damage the Thinket or the table (depending on the surface), it could also spin off the table.

Overall I love the Thinket, I don’t “Thinkit” there is any fidget device out there that compares. The Thinket can be found at http://www.chessmate.com/thinket.html

Snow Peak Hozuki LED Lantern review (full size)

I added (full size) because there is a mini size of this light. Here is a link to the website for this “full size” lantern.

My wife bought me the original version of this light years ago for my birthday. It was orange and white, and had two modes, standard and candle.

The length of the string is adjustable, and you can set it easily. The hook acts like a stand or cradle. Turn it upside down and rest the light on the hook to use it on a table. Snow Peak also makes a rechargeable battery pack (I think) for around $40. There is a USB plug in the body to recharge the battery pack. That’s a bit much for me. I use rechargeable eneloops.

The frosted circular part is made out of silicone. It’s firm enough for the light to stand on, but it’s also soft, squishable and just plain cool.

Light Modes

Normal mode: Clicking the button will turn the light on. Pressing and holding the button after its on will dim it to the desired level.

Sleep mode: Hold the button until the light flashes slowly and let go. Press and hold the button to dim. In this mode it will slowly dim as sound in the room decreases.  This works okay, but this light is like my grandfather, hard of hearing so, it will dim down pretty quickly.

Candle mode: Hold the button down for a bit until the light flashes quickly then release. Press and hold the button to dim the light. In this mode the light will react to sound and wind. This will cause the light to flicker like a candle. This light needs hearing aids though, because it needs a lot of sound or wind to make it flicker.

Difference between versions

Compared to the old version, the new version has three modes including candle feature, but it doesn’t flicker on it’s own like in the original version. It only flickers if there is wind or noise. With the newer version it takes a lot of noise to make the lantern flicker or go out. To make this one flicker you would need a loud discussion, the light sitting on a speaker, or a wind storm. I don’t have it anymore, but I preferred the older models candle mode. I’m looking to buy the older version that was produced around 2014.

Modifications and anatomy

I was curious, so I took this guy apart. I wanted to see if I could make it more sensitive to sound. Let’s look inside.

labeled-board_web

I point out Volume 1 and Volume 2 as if I know what they do. I have no idea. I’m not even sure they are volume. They rotate and I adjusted both, but didn’t see any difference. My theory is that one adjusts the sleep mode sensitivity and the other adjusts the candle mode sensitivity. I put them back to the original positions. I did however find the microphone. When the light is apart it’s very sensitive to sound. A polite conversation will make the light flicker and blowing on it will make the light go out. So, with some adjustments you can essentially have a lantern that will flicker with light sounds and can turn off by blowing on it.

I modified the casing to make it more sensitive to sound. The speaker sits behind clear plastic that has a hole adjacent to the microphone. The hole goes part of the way through, but not all the way through the plastic. I figured drilling the hole out all the way would do the trick. I know it won’t be waterproof or water resistant any longer, but I don’t go camping or use it on rainy days.

where_to_drill_web

The hole on the front is already there and goes part of the way through, so I drilled it through the rest of the way. I guess I could have just drilled it thought more, but not all the way to keep it sealed. But, hindsight…

underside_web

After putting it back together it still works. It reacts quite a lot to sound, and I can blow it out. I suppose I could always add some clear epoxy if I wanted to seal it up again. Or I could put some sort of material behind it to block the sound in order to adjust the sensitivity or even make it waterproof using a thin membrane of some sort.

Impressions and thoughts

I think this light is very well made and incredibly charming. I really like the uncommon shape. If I were to make any design changes, I would have a 4th mode that acts like a candle without needing to be activated by sound, but would also have sound sensitivity as a bonus, just like the original version.
